A Winning Attitude: Why 3 is greater than 2

Listen to This Blog Post:

On May 21, 2025, in Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the Indiana Pacers rallied from a 14-point deficit with under three minutes remaining in regulation to defeat the New York Knicks in overtime,   The Pacers were down 14 with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter. Aaron Nesmith, with six 3-pointers in the final five minutes, fueled the comeback.

This video shows that comeback.

Taking and making 3 point shots in a game also offers a number of reward outcomes that are not available by taking and making only 2 point shots.  The reward outcomes are only available by taking, “3 > 2” risk actions in a basketball game.

You will face adversity many different times in your own life.

You can win more often personally and professionally in your own life by taking 3 > 2® risk actions.

On a basketball court, there is a designated arc called the three point arc or three point line. It is the wider arc in the above picture.

In a basketball game, if a player has both of their feet outside the three point arc and successfully shoots and makes a basket, the player is awarded 3 points.  If a player shoots from inside the three point arc, the player is awarded 2 points.

Just like in a basketball game, in a 3 > 2® environment, your own life is defined by a set of life arcs

3 > 2® risk actions are based in part on understanding and changing your life arcs

Your life arcs are your own internal and external personal boundaries and beliefs.

Your major life arc is similar to the three point arc on a basketball floor and is the boundary of your very own three point life zone

You have multiple different minor life arcs inside your major life arcs which are your very own two point life zones. There are two arcs in the above picture.

Your major life arc is therefore an outer boundary and is called your comfort zone.

Your minor life arcs include a set of internal and external physical, emotional, psychological, sexual and spiritual boundaries.

Your major life arc and minor life arcs define a set of behavioral constructs that predict how you will react to the situations you encounter in your daily life.

To initiate any winning change your in your own life, you must step completely outside your major life arc with both feet into your own three point life zone and take “3 > 2®” risk actions.

How can you win by taking “3 > 2®” risk actions in your own life?

1. Step Outside Your Major Life Arc Intentionally

To manage risk effectively with “3 > 2®” actions, you must recognize that true change requires stepping fully outside your major life arc, your comfort zone. Risk is not just something to be avoided. Risk is the gateway to personal growth. This means embracing risk discomfort as a strategic decision of winning rather than a failure of security.

2. Engage in 3 Risk Actions for Every 2 Limiting Actions

The “3 > 2®” risk action principles also mean choosing at least three bold, intentional actions that push you beyond the influence of just two limiting factors, like fear and routine. This ensures you’re operating in your three point life zone, where real winning transformation occurs. In risk terms, this involves taking calculated, bold leaps, not just safe steps.

3. Balance Your Minor Life Arcs Inside Your Major Life Arc

Your minor life arcs, your emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual and sexual boundaries, must also be evaluated and balanced in your “3 > 2®” risk assessments. Effective risk management includes aligning with these boundaries, with bold actions internal readiness. The best decisions involve internal confidence and external courage within your minor life arcs.
